A Place for Specialized Security Professionals

You've probably met some security professionals who are true generalists, seemingly able to master a wide range of security topics and to consider the impacts of any problem that comes up, but the field of cybersecurity is so broad today that specialization is almost a necessity. So what happens when you're a technically minded security professional who needs to get smart in a hurry on a topic that's outside your specialization?

That's what the F5 Labs Learning Center is for. It doesn't matter if you've been in the job for twenty years or twenty minutes: everyone needs a comprehensive explanation of topics that they're not familiar with. And ideally, that explanation isn't so technical that you need to go look up three more things just to understand, but also isn't so generic that you're wasting your time. That's the sweet spot we're aiming for here: helping smart folks get smarter.

Understanding Attacker Tactics

Attackers have a lot of different tools in their kit, and they often have the advantage of being able to apply their methods at scale: they don't need to succeed at every attempt, they just need to succeed often enough to make it worthwhile. And from our perspective, that means we need to understand how they do what they do, so that we're not the slowest person running from the bear. We aim to give you an entry-level understanding of a variety of attack methods so that you can understand how they work and the basics of how to stop it from working.

Understanding Security Controls and Frameworks

While understanding attacker methods is useful, we also need to understand what we can do about those attacks. A good defensive posture is often likened to Swiss cheese: each layer has holes in it, but so long as there's no one hole that goes through all the layers, you're probably going to be fine. So to get there, you need to know about the different layers of protection that you can apply in your environment. It's also helpful to use frameworks to think about the problem of security in a comprehensive way, so that you don't get so focused on a specific threat that you lose track of the others.

Ready to Learn More?

While we might start looking into security topics because we have known unknowns, there's often a large amount of unknown unknowns lying below the surface. Just like falling down a rabbit hole on Wikipedia, learning something new in the field of security usually leads to a recognition that there's three more "something new"s that you need to learn next. If you're ready to discover some new learning, or maybe just get a more robust understanding of something you already have the basics of, you can find all of our Learning Center articles below.
