F5 Silverline DDoS Protection Safeguards Weebly against the Largest and Most Sophisticated DDoS Attacks

Weebly was founded in 2006 to enable consumers to easily create high quality websites. Today, Weebly has helped more than 20 million people around the world start a website, and it receives more than 175 million unique visitors each month. Since Weebly is a website building service for consumers, it has been the target of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, which it has previously mitigated through the company’s internally built security infrastructure.

Business Challenges

In 2013, Weebly saw an increase in scale and complexity of DDoS attacks on businesses globally and decided to review DDoS mitigation services that could provide an added safeguard in the event a large scale attack overwhelmed their internal resources. This prompted a search for secondary DDoS protection.

“At Weebly, we built an internal IT infrastructure that included DDoS mitigation capabilities. While this infrastructure served us well in successfully thwarting DDoS attacks in the past, we began to see an increasing number of larger and more complex DDoS attacks,” Chris Fanini, Cofounder and CTO of Weebly.

Weebly evaluated a number of options and ultimately selected a solution from Defense.Net, which was acquired by F5 in May 2014. “I’ve followed Barrett Lyon’s DDoS innovations over the years and have been impressed with the technology he developed and with the team of DDoS veterans he has assembled,” says Fanini. “By partnering with [F5] and utilizing its massive distributed scrubbing centers, we remain protected from these larger DDoS attacks—enabling us to remain focused on delivering our users a high quality experience.

Weebly selected Defense.Net’s DDoS SWAT service to operate behind its internal mitigation infrastructure. This cloud-based service, now called F5 Silverline DDoS Protection, incorporates advanced DDoS mitigation techniques designed for when a primary DDoS mitigation service fails. The advanced technology developed by DDoS pioneer Barrett Lyon also includes a team of industry expert DDoS fighters to offer the most advanced secondary DDoS protection on the market. The installation process was completed in hours and immediately began backing up Weebly’s internal infrastructure.

“When the big attacks come, we’ll be ready.” Chris Fanini, Co-Founder and CTO of Weebly

Incorporating the added layer of protection and resulting uninterrupted DDoS mitigation and analysis, Weebly is now well protected from DDoS threats of all sizes and complexity.

“The largest DDoS attack we’ve experienced so far was a 41Gbps attack. Sometimes the purpose of the attacks are to test our network.  Other instances have been feeble attempts at extortion,” says Fanini. “Nevertheless, the attacks are definitely getting larger and we know that trend will continue as the number of websites we support increases. That is why we are working with Defense.Net. When the big attacks come, we’ll be ready.”
