Manager, Systems Engineering - Solutions

The F5 Solutions team is growing and looking for a development manager to lead the solution engineering template team. The Solutions team delivers world-class offerings to F5’s customers that enable rapid and reliable deployments in public and private clouds.  Using your technical skills and knowledge, you will ensure that the individual engineers understand their priorities, and have the tools and support to accomplish their goals. Additionally, this position is responsible for the design, development and maintenance of key product components for our cloud solutions. You will design, code, test and deliver new/modified functionality in the cloud and you will collaborate with peers on these development tasks.

The Solutions team is the technical resource within the F5 Product Development organization.  We are responsible for solution development, testing, and documentation. Systems Engineers on the team are expected to have complete product knowledge (both F5 and competitive), and expert level networking engineering knowledge (including design and troubleshooting).

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Be a key technical leader accountable for successfully collaborating with key product stakeholders on envisioning, architecting, planning, and delivering highly impactful, innovative Solutions
  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the solution development template team, and collaborate with solution support staff on the successful delivery of high quality releases in a timely and efficient manner
  • Collaborate with the Systems Engineering management team to develop, implement, measure, and track team metrics to ensure effectiveness of team, processes, and development team resource utilization
  • Establish and manage quarterly and annual budgets for the development team
  • Lead, mentor, manage, and grow a healthy, high performing team where every team member can do their best work
  • Design and implement major components of products
  • Document software designs via functional specifications and other design documents
  • Conduct presentations internal and external
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  

  • Ability to reduce a solution into a set of common configuration items and a set of unique requirements for each solution deployment
  • Strong industry background including past experience with one or more of the following: load balancing, application layer firewalls, SSL VPNs, web acceleration, or WAN acceleration.
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP networking, layer 7 protocols, and *NIX.
  • Knowledge of Application Delivery Infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of underlying web technologies including HTTP, HTML and JavaScript (or other scripting languages)
  • Solid knowledge and experience with network and web technologies
  • 3+ years programming experience preferably in a software language that supports F5 product line
  • Excellent analytic / trouble-shooting and debugging skills
  • Can design and implement new functionality in multiple feature areas, while developing subject matter expertise in at least one.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Exceptional leadership abilities and technical skills with a proven track record of 5+ years of experience leading high performing teams in the delivery of complex, high quality, software in a timely and cost-effective fashion
  • Proven ability to recruit, attract, develop, and retain high performers, as well as build agile, innovative, high performing teams that consistently deliver exceptional results
  • Passion for mentoring, motivating, and growing software professionals both personally and professionally
  • 7+ years of experience developing and delivering complex software products.
  • 2+ years experience leading technical personnel.
  • Strong analysis and problem solving, and debugging skills, as well as the ability to pragmatically and appropriately apply these skills to the task of developing Solutions using application delivery technology
  • Proven ability to manage and execute on multiple project timelines and team priorities
  • Demonstrated track record of rapid ramp-up in new technical domains with a proven ability to lead teams in the research and development of innovative solutions to challenging technical problems
  • Passion for product quality, excellence in software engineering, and a strong customer focus which results in putting customer needs first
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, and the ability to lead and collaborate effectively in a small, multi-disciplined, fast-paced team environment
  • BS/MS in Computer Science, Mathematics or related Science/Engineering discipline or equivalent experience
