Virgin Radio Improves Download Speeds and Site Performance with F5

F5's BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager enables Virgin Radio to accommodate increased site usage and traffic volumes

F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the global leader in Application Delivery Networking, today announced that international pop and rock radio station Virgin Radio has chosen F5's BIG-IP® 6400 Local Traffic Manager to ensure high availability and secure delivery of Windows Media Server and Audio services, resulting in quicker download speeds of online content for the listener.

Prior to implementing the F5 solution, Virgin Radio's web infrastructure had relied on a number of Cisco Local Directors that were running near capacity and unable to meet anticipated increases in usage and traffic volumes. Following a number of tests, scoping and project planning sessions, Virgin Radio selected a high availability deployment consisting of a pair of BIG-IP 6400 Local Traffic Managers, each complemented with F5's Intelligent Compression module to help streamline traffic across the WAN and Internet links.

"We considered a number of products but were particularly impressed by the technical performance of the F5 solution," said Mark Bodenham, Technology Operations Manager, Virgin Radio. "Due to strict business demands, it was essential that the installation was seamless and didn't impact the day-to-day running of the Virgin Radio network systems. F5's BIG-IP solution was delivered on time and with immediate benefits such as improved site performance and reduced cost of ownership."

"The F5 BIG-IP implementation at Virgin Radio was a partnership of F5 and System Professional Ltd, an F5 Premier Advantage Partner and a specialist application delivery networking provider," said Paul Coates, F5 UK and Ireland Sales Director. "We have established a solid relationship with System Professional Ltd and are very confident in their capabilities, given their proven track record with other customers in the media sector."

The F5 solution has greatly improved the resilience and speed of the Virgin Radio website, and it also provides an invaluable monitoring service that efficiently load balances the new podcast download facility. Virgin Radio staff have also benefited from the ease of management provided in the product. Following the success of the F5 BIG-IP implementation, the technology will now be extended to the Virgin Radio SQL servers.

"With the increasing wealth of online content such as new downloads, uploads, live streams and multimedia content available on Virgin Radio, the increase in online listeners is huge. Therefore, it's important that our infrastructure offers the same level of quality and reliability that is expected from radio," added Bodenham. "With the aid of F5, we believe that we are now equipped to deal with the changing online world and cater to the iPod generation."
