uRoam Announces First Web-Based Remote Access Solution with Complete Client / Server Application Support

FirePass VPN Connector Supports ERP, CRM, MS Exchange With No Client Setup

uRoam Corporation, the leader in comprehensive secure user access, announced today the first web-based remote access solution with complete support for client-server applications without requiring any pre-installed Virtual Private Network (VPN) software on the remote-point PC. This new Advanced Access feature, the FirePass™ VPN Connector, allows the FirePass 1000 and 4000 Servers to support browser-based access to MS Exchange® servers and to popular ERP and CRM client-server applications, easily and conveniently.

"We expect SSL-based solutions to eventually be the dominant security protocol for user- and application-level remote access," said analyst Zeus Kerravala, Vice President of the Enterprise Infrastructure Planning Services practice at The Yankee Group. "The economies of scale and the convenience and ubiquity of access make SSL the solution of choice. From a features perspective, uRoam's FirePass server is the leader in this emerging space."

The FirePass VPN Connector offers network connectivity fully comparable to traditional IPSec VPNs. But unlike IPSec VPNs, which require setup and configuration on each accessing device, the self-configuring FirePass VPN Connector uses the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol. This technology allows the user to access the host network application servers using any secure web browser.

Key Features

The FirePass VPN Connector is completely integrated into the user's browser. It configures itself with no user or IT intervention, and there is no separate "dial" operation. And unlike IPSec-layer VPNs, there are no firewall or ISP issues obstructing communication, because the FirePass VPN Connector operates at the application layer. If the remote user can get to® to buy a book, that user can use FirePass to access the target network.

The FirePass VPN Connector offers:

  • Browser-based access to client-server applications. The self-configuring FirePass VPN Connector does not require any pre-installed, pre-configured software on the remote system. Field staff and travelers can access their applications without needing any individual setup or configuration of their PCs. The VPN Connector supports UDP and TCP applications.
  • Two Factor Authentication. The FirePass fully supports U.S. market-leading RSA SecurID® token-based authentication. FirePass also offers a built-in implementation of VASCO Digipass®.
  • Complete Data Privacy. The FirePass offers browser SSL options including RC4 and 3DES encryption - the technologies most commonly used today with PPTP and IPSec VPNs.
  • Simple maintenance. Upgrades or replacement of field PCs do not entail any additional VPN-related maintenance, and changes to the host network or IP address can be made without reconfiguring the remote users' systems.
  • Packet-based, group-based firewall. Groups of users can be restricted to particular ports and addresses within the LAN. This feature allows full client-server application support without opening the entire network up to each accessing user.

Products and Availability

The FirePass VPN Connector is available now on the FirePass 1000 and 4000 Server. It is available through a direct sales force or from an authorized uRoam Advantage Partner or Reseller.
