Tayside Fire and Rescue Services Selects F5 for Bulletproof Communications

All service calls will run on unified communications system powered by F5's BIG-IP system

F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the global leader in Application Delivery Networking, today announced that Tayside Fire and Rescue Services will implement the F5®BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager™ (LTM™) solution to manage traffic and ensure high availability for its communications services. BIG-IP LTM removes single points of failure and virtualises networks and applications, ensuring that applications are always available.

Tayside Fire and Rescue covers an area of approximately 7,500 square kilometres, with a population of 392,000. The majority of the population is centered in Dundee and Perth with the remainder spread throughout a number of towns and villages in Angus, Perth, and Kinross. Tayside employs nearly 800 personnel: 668 operational firefighters and more than 70 support staff, who run 24 strategically located fire stations that operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

F5 BIG-IP LTM will provide a stable environment for Tayside's new Unified Communications system, consisting of a Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007-in place since last year-and a new Nortel IP Telephony infrastructure that is currently being deployed. It will ensure resilience in its communications environment to guarantee that if any problems at one or more sites occur, data traffic will automatically transfer to another site, so that no calls or other communications are lost.

"Most people don't realise it, but communication is key to our business," says Gary Bellfield, ICT Manager at Tayside Fire and Rescue Services "The F5 solution will be absolutely critical to the continued success of our Unified Communications projects, and will provide a platform to deliver communications-enabled business process throughout our organisation. The implementation of F5's load balancing technology is a critical part of our Unified Communications strategy, ensuring maximum availability and overall system resilience."

Tayside Fire and Rescue Services had been researching various methods of adding flexibility into its communications for some time, evaluating various vendors, as well as reviewing technologies implemented by other authorities. As Bellfield notes, F5 always stood out: "During our extensive research, F5 always came out on top. It stands out as having by far the best product-set on the market."

Owen Cole, F5 Technical Director, UK&I added: "We're delighted that Tayside Fire and Rescue has selected F5. The trust that Tayside puts in our technology is testament to F5 delivering the most innovative, secure, and resilient technologies available in the network application delivery space."

Nick East, Account Manager at IT services provider Computacenter, a key consultant to Tayside, concludes: "The Computacenter team, working closely with F5, was able to understand the customer requirement, design a solution, and provide the equipment within extremely tight timeframes, enabling the team at Tayside Fire and Rescue to meet wider project deadlines. We will be jointly implementing a very powerful and flexible communications solution."
