New Version of BIG-IP Offers Hardened Security and Unmatched Control Over IP-Based Traffic To Meet Demanding Customer Needs

F5 Networks' BIG-IP is an essential networking component for enterprises deploying a broad array of IP applications and services
F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the leading provider of Internet Traffic and Content Management (iTCM) products, today announced a new version of its award-winning BIG-IP solution that sets the standard for security, control, and intelligence, required to successfully deploy all types of web services and applications. With this release of BIG-IP, F5 builds upon its technology leadership for Internet traffic management and introduces powerful new features unique to F5, including: (1) extensive support for client-side SSL certificates; (2) insertion of client IP Address in the HTTP header to fully track and log a user's interaction with a site; and (3) enhanced control over web applications through the use of Quality-of-Service and Type-of-Service support.

"IT departments are faced with the growing complexities of large scale deployments of web services and applications and require much more granular control to ensure that the proper amount of resources are allocated to a given service or application," said Lucinda Borovick, Director, Data Center Networks, IDC. "This control provides a level of insurance against poor performance or even outages. F5 has made significant advancements in BIG-IP through innovative offerings like their unique support for Client Side SSL certificates for end-to-end security for web services and applications."

Highlights of BIG-IP version 4.2

Advanced Usage of Client Side SSL Certificates. Offers more flexibility, control and security for web services and applications using SSL Client Certificates than any traffic management product on the market. BIG-IP can examine a client certificate in order to authenticate a user and insert key certificate information, or the entire certificate, into a packet and pass it on to the server application for validation and authentication. By using Client Certificates, enterprises have more secure and granular control over users and requests.

Inserting Client IP Address in HTTP Header. Enables the web server to use the Client IP address information for specific applications. BIG-IP can preserve this important piece of information so web services and applications can fully track and log customers' interaction with a site. This control ensures that the proper amount of resources are allocated to a given web service or application.

Quality-of-Service and Type-of-Service Support. By supporting the Quality-of-Service (QoS) and Type-of-Service (ToS) standards, BIG-IP allows greater segmentation between different application types. BIG-IP inspects requests for QoS and ToS information, then directs the user to the most appropriate resource to service the request. This capability enables businesses to intelligently manage traffic and provide the best response for core business applications.

"Since F5's beginning, security, intelligence, control and performance have been our primary core-competencies and we've succeeded at consistently delivering best-of-class iTCM solutions that outpace our competitors in all these areas," said Dan Matte senior director of product management at F5 Networks. "As web services and applications become more varied it becomes imperative that customers are able to control IP-based traffic at granular levels. This new version builds upon BIG-IP's unique ability to intercept, inspect, transform, and direct traffic, offering complete control and smooth, uninterrupted deployment of web services and applications."
