F5's Landmark BIG-IP v10 Release Delivers Outstanding Value to Customers and Increases CapEx and OpEx Savings

F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the global leader in Application Delivery Networking (ADN), today announced that its BIG-IP® version 10 software continues to be well-received by customers worldwide. In April, F5 released BIG-IP v10, as part of its vision to unify application and data delivery services. Thousands of enterprises and service providers have downloaded BIG-IP v10 software to help streamline application delivery and reduce CapEx and OpEx costs. F5 continues to enrich the BIG-IP solution with more Application Ready Templates and a new release of Enterprise Manager, which helps customers planning an upgrade from previous versions of BIG-IP to the most recent 10.0.1 release.

"We're very pleased with our customers' reaction to BIG-IP v10 based on new features and overall quality," said Mark Anderson, SVP of Worldwide Sales at F5. "New customer deployments and upgrades to v10 from previous versions continue to go smoothly. Customers are realizing the value of BIG-IP v10 in OpEx and CapEx reductions by consolidating key ADN functionality into a single box and dramatically increasing workforce efficiency through simplified management and the use of Application Ready Templates."

This latest generation of BIG-IP software affords organizations a dynamic IT infrastructure to deliver services that fluidly adapt to changing business requirements. It has benefited organizations by enabling them to integrate with dynamic computing models such as virtualization, cloud computing, and SaaS (Software as a Service), without having to completely re-architect existing systems.

Customer Feedback on BIG-IP v10

Hobsons, a global solutions provider for the education market, delivers SaaS-based tools that help colleges manage student recruitment, enrollment, and retention. This includes tools such as CRM, online applications, social networking, and online chats that colleges use to keep students engaged. "As pressure mounts to reduce costs and increase efficiencies, colleges are turning to Hobsons to leverage shared services," said Patrick McFadin, Director of Systems and Architecture at Hobsons. "In turn, we rely on BIG-IP through its ability to streamline application delivery services. Not only can we consolidate multiple software modules onto a single BIG-IP device, our IT staff is able to quickly establish and maintain policies, such as authorization and access to resources, which is crucial in SaaS and cloud computing environments. And, F5's product quality is top-notch. IT departments monitor 'v.0' releases particularly closely, and we were very pleased with how smoothly the v10 deployment went."

BlueFort Security, a company that delivers solutions based on F5® products, helps its customers ensure secure and efficient access to enterprise applications. "BIG-IP v10 is working really well for us and we're particularly pleased with its ability to unify WebAccelerator and Application Security Manager with Local Traffic Manager on one device," said Ian Jennings, Technical Director at BlueFort Security. "A lot of our customers are looking to consolidate hardware and virtualize services, so BIG-IP v10 really hits the mark for them. The increased administrative control available in the v10 release has also been received very well."

Streamlined Application Deployments with Application Ready Templates

With BIG-IP v10, F5 delivered a rich library of Application Ready Templates to simplify the creation of profiles, policies, and other configuration parameters needed to optimize a BIG-IP deployment with specific applications such as Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, Exchange Web Access 2007, VMware View, Oracle Application Server 10g, and SAP ERP. These templates reduce setup time for administrators from hours to minutes.

"IDC finds that application templates are an excellent way for customers to benefit from the wealth of functionality available from Application Delivery Networking in a timely, operationally efficient manner," said Cindy Borovick, Research Vice President, Datacenter Networks at IDC. F5 continues to offer new templates to help companies further reduce operating expenses and streamline application delivery. The most recent release of BIG-IP v10 (v10.0.1) includes six new Application Ready Templates that provide customers with a full range of options for automated application deployment. New Application Ready Templates include:

  • SAP ERP Central Component
  • SAP Enterprise Portal
  • Generic HTTP
  • Generic IP Forwarding
  • Generic LDAP
  • Generic RADIUS

Enhanced Network Visibility and Manageability with Enterprise Manager

BIG-IP v10.0.1 also provides enhanced functionality for Enterprise Manager, F5's centralized management appliance for BIG-IP devices. The latest release of Enterprise Manager (version 1.8) simplifies security policy management for BIG-IP Application Security Manager (ASM). Using a centralized wizard, customers can quickly and easily deploy security policies to multiple ASM devices, resulting in faster and easier management, and further lowering operational expenses. This new version of Enterprise Manager also includes specialized wizards to help customers simplify their migration to BIG-IP v10.

BIG-IP v10.0.1 and all associated product modules are available today. Software product modules include BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager, Application Security Manager, WebAccelerator, Global Traffic Manager, and Link Controller. The new Application Ready Templates are available for no additional fee. Enterprise Manager 1.8 is available now. More information about the BIG-IP v10 system is available at
