F5's ARX Enables Tobu Railway to Implement an Agile and Efficient Storage Environment

Microsoft and F5 technologies improve IT management efficiency and business agility through increased collaboration and more effective internal communication

F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the global leader in Application Delivery Networking, today announced that Tobu Railway Co., Ltd. has deployed the F5®ARX® file virtualization solution to establish an efficient and scalable file storage environment. With ARX, Tobu Railway is able to install additional storage systems and perform data migrations without service interruptions.

Tobu Railway has seen its data volumes grow rapidly over the past several years, largely due to the digitization of documents and images relating to railway operations and facilities. In the past, each new server installation required file access to be suspended. Along with the inconvenience, additional costs were associated with the system downtime, as IT teams were forced to schedule upgrades on nights and weekends when demand for file access would be the least.

In planning the relocation of Tobu Railway's head office, the company took the opportunity to update its file storage environment to address data management issues. The ARX solution enables seamless data migration and continuous file access when transferring data to a new location or installing additional file servers. In addition, the ARX system's automated policy-based management is expected to substantially reduce storage management tasks along with the associated costs.

While upgrading their systems, Tobu Railway also employed Data Manager, F5's storage management tool, to evaluate its file server environment. Analysis revealed that a considerable number of files had not been updated or accessed for more than a year. With this information, Tobu Railway intends to introduce a tiered storage model where less-frequently used files are stored in low-cost secondary storage systems, freeing up higher-cost systems. In addition, the tiering strategy will reduce the amount of data Tobu Railway is backing up regularly. This approach will shorten the company's backup window and lower the costs of backup operations, adding to the ROI that Tobu Railway has achieved with the F5 ARX solution.
