F5 Supports Mercy Corps and Team Baatar Hero in Mongol Rally

Team Baatar Hero to venture 10K miles to Mongolia and raise funds for Mercy Corps; F5 helps adventuresome team stay reliably connected throughout journey under extreme networking conditions with the BIG-IP Edge Gateway solution

F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the global leader in Application Delivery Networking (ADN), is proud to support Team Baatar Hero, a local group of Seattle adventure travelers, in its quest to drive 10,000 miles to raise funds for global relief and development agency Mercy Corps. As part of the annual Mongol Rally, kicking off July 24, Team Baatar Hero will drive from London, England to Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia, raising funds along the way for Mercy Corps’ work to reduce poverty and help Mongolians improve their lives.

“Through the ‘F5 Connects’ corporate giving program, we’re pleased to support Team Baatar Hero on its journey for Mercy Corps,” said Laurie Likai, VP, Human Resources at F5 Networks. “The spirit of the Mongol Rally and Team Baatar Hero align with F5 Connects’ mission to create meaningful change by supporting the communities where we live, and around the world. We applaud this brave group of adventurists for their dedication to this great cause and the Mongol Rally.”

F5’s support for Team Baatar Hero includes funds to help purchase vehicles for the 10,000-mile journey, as well as a laptop computer and advanced remote access services via the BIG-IP® Edge Gatewaysolution to ensure that the team remains connected while traveling through remote regions. At the end of the rally, Team Baatar Hero will also donate the vehicles.

“Team Baatar Hero and F5 Connects are inspiring in their commitment to helping impoverished families in Mongolia,” said Neal Keny-Guyer, CEO at Mercy Corps. “Funds raised during the Mongol Rally make a real difference in people’s lives—providing opportunities for them to get jobs, start businesses, and take care of their families. It’s our supporters—corporations and individuals like the rally participants—who make our work possible.”

Not Your Typical ‘Road Warrior’

Team Baatar Hero will provide blog posts and video updates via the web throughout its journey. To ensure it has reliable remote connectivity, the team will be using the BIG-IP® Edge Clientrunning on Windows 7. This means the travelers will not need to worry about having multiple devices to maintain connectivity as they drive through remote areas across Turkey, Azerbaijan, Russia, and other locations. They can use the same client, software, and configuration regardless of what type of network is available, whether via private WiFi, public WiFi, Ethernet, or other.

For much of its journey, the team will be connecting to the internet over the BGAN satellite network, using the BIG-IP Edge Client and Edge Gateway solutions to optimize and secure that connection. This technology solution helps maintain low data and connection costs even in extreme and remote locations. Team Baatar Hero’s use of the BIG-IP Edge Client to manage and optimize sustained connectivity over the BGAN satellite network is a first for F5. The BIG-IP Edge Client will be directly supported by a BIG-IP Edge Gateway remote access solution at F5’s headquarters in Seattle.

“We’re so pleased with the support from F5, including the monetary donations, technology, and the enthusiasm from their employees,” said Brian Shrader, team member of Team Baatar Hero. “We are excited to use BIG-IP Edge Gateway’s capabilities under these unusual conditions. Our team will be taking secure remote access into new territory and we appreciate the opportunity to push the use of this technology forward while keeping the team connected throughout its journey, which is sure to be interesting and inspiring.”

Along the way, F5 will generate support for Team Baatar Hero and Mercy Corps by hosting various events?from fundraisers in regional F5 offices to kick-off parties in Prague and London. At each event, F5 employees and partners will support the fundraising for Team Baatar Hero through contests, raffles, and other activities.
