F5 Selected by WIND Hellas for Fast 24x7 Web Application Access

Greece's second-largest telecommunication company relies on BIG-IP solutions to optimize applications, meet customer service needs, and reduce CapEx and OpEx costs

F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the global leader in Application Delivery Networking, today announced that WIND Hellas, Greece's second-largest telecommunication company, has implemented the F5® BIG-IP® Local Traffic Manager™ (LTM™) solution for intelligent application delivery and high availability. The deployment, carried out by Greek ITC systems integrator Pylones, enables continuous 24x7 access to web applications for all internal users and customers visiting WIND Hellas' retail stores.

WIND Hellas is now the second-largest telecommunications provider in Greece, serving almost 6 million customers. Founded in 1992 as a subsidiary of Telecom Italia, and now part of the Weather Investments group, it has established itself as the technology leader of the Greek mobile telephony market. Beyond the mobile telephony market space, the company also specializes in fixed telephony and broadband Internet.

Prior to selecting F5, WIND Hellas faced challenges in addressing increased user demand for various corporate applications. In addition, WIND Hellas needed to maintain an "always-on" interface between stores and WIND headquarters-a factor that threatened to considerably increase WIND Hellas' capital and operational expenses.

After extensive competitive evaluation, F5 BIG-IP LTM was selected to optimize WIND Hellas' network and provide intelligent load balancing and high availability for its applications. In addition, two software modules-F5 BIG-IP WebAccelerator ™ and BIG-IP Link Controller ™ solutions-have been implemented to deliver acceleration and efficient management capabilities over multiple ISPs for WIND Hellas' Internet interface.

The F5 solution provides WIND Hellas with e-business continuity, faster processing of SSL traffic through SSL offload, and greatly improved application availability overall. And the scalable nature of F5's BIG-IP application delivery platform means WIND Hellas can easily add on other software modules from F5 as its technology needs evolve.

"By adopting F5 technologies, we've achieved high system availability and optimization without the need for time-consuming, expensive changes in application source code," said Panagiotis Gerasimopoulos, Web & IP Technologies Manager at WIND Hellas.

"This implementation provides WIND Hellas with increased IT agility and competitive technology advantages over other telecom providers," stated Emmanuel Netos, General Manager at Pylones. "This is one of the most significant projects our team has completed in Greece."

"To achieve WIND's goal, a unified application delivery platform was required to ensure better interoperability of its existing infrastructure," said Diego Arrabal, Regional Director at F5. "At the same time, F5 provided a simple, intuitive management environment with fast, seamless upgrades to cater to growing application optimization and availability requirements."
