F5 Partners with the Boston Athletic Association to Deliver Real-Time Tracking of Boston Marathon Runners

First year that the popular marathon website is using Application Delivery Networking products to provide online visitors with the best experience possible; F5 products ensure that the website is fast and always available

F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the global leader in Application Delivery Networking, today announced it is providing technology for the 111th Boston Marathon-the world's oldest annual marathon. F5 products, including BIG-IP® systems and FirePass® Controllers, will ensure participants' family, friends, and fans worldwide have instant and reliable access to marathon information online.

F5 has donated state-of-the-art equipment and services to help build the infrastructure supporting the Boston Athletic Association (BAA) race website, www.bostonmarathon.org. The site, which enables real-time tracking of racers along the historic marathon route, is expected to attract an estimated 950,000 visitors and generate an estimated ten million page views during the six-hour marathon. By using F5's Application Delivery Networking products, the BAA can deliver up-to-the-minute race results for thousands of spectators and media worldwide, without overloading their servers or network infrastructure.

"A lot of people would like to attend the Marathon in person, but can't. The Boston Marathon's website provides a way for people everywhere to share in the excitement," said Guy Morse, Executive Director of the BAA. "Thanks to F5, fans worldwide can simultaneously track runners throughout the marathon in a fast, reliable manner."

F5 has provided two BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager (LTM) systems to secure, accelerate, and deliver web applications generated on servers supporting www.bostonmarathon.org. BIG-IP LTM offers the industry's most intelligent and robust Application Delivery Networking features, ensuring the availability of mission-critical applications. BIG-IP LTM provides up to 3x performance improvement by offloading valuable server cycles and ensuring priority applications are served first.

"F5 is excited to support this prestigious event that draws runners and viewers from all over the globe," said Erik Giesa, Vice President of Product Management and Product Marketing at F5. "For the first time, the race website will have an Application Delivery Network as part of its infrastructure, which will help ensure that website visitors can always get race information quickly-even during peak traffic times. We're pleased that we can help the BAA reach more spectators to encourage marathon participation worldwide."

In addition, F5's solution gives the BAA the added assurance of expanding the website's capabilities for future races without adding servers.
