F5 Networks' SSL VPN Product Awarded Key Certification from the Virtual Private Network Consortium

Certification from security consortium assures customers that F5's FirePass product will interoperate readily with Microsoft Exchange Outlook Web Access and corporate portal applications
F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the global leader in Application Traffic Management, today announced that it was one of the first SSL VPN vendors to achieve certification by the Virtual Private Network Consortium (VPNC), the international trade association for manufacturers in the VPN market. F5's SSL VPN product, FirePass® Controller, was awarded two certification logos for successfully passing the VPNC's SSL Portal and SSL Exchange tests. The certification benefits the market by establishing a set of standards that SSL VPN vendors must meet in order to ensure customers that a vendor's SSL VPN system works 'as advertised'.

"We expanded our range of testing to address the heated SSL VPN market and a growing set of customer requirements," said Paul Hoffman, Director of VPNC. "The VPNC provides a vendor-neutral test environment to help customers validate certain product functionality and validate vendor claims to ensure a successful SSL VPN rollout."

In addition to F5, eight vendors submitted their SSL VPN products for certification under VPNC's SSL Portal and SSL Exchange interoperability testing. FirePass Controller successfully passed the SSL Portal Test, which assures SSL VPN users that a particular SSL VPN system will work correctly as a front end for a typical corporate portal application. To pass, the SSL VPN system must correctly allow a user outside the corporate firewall access to numerous linked internal web sites. This involves rewriting the URLs that appear on web pages so that the remote user's experience is similar to an internal user's experience on the same web sites. F5's FirePass product also achieved certification for the SSL Exchange Test, which assures SSL VPN users that a particular SSL VPN product will work correctly as a front end for Microsoft Exchange Outlook Web Access (OWA). To pass, the SSL VPN system must correctly allow a user outside the corporate firewall to correctly use OWA from both Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003. This involves rewriting the URLs that appear in email messages so that the remote user's experience is similar to an internal users experience reading the same messages from OWA.

"F5 is pleased to join the VPNC and support the cause of a respected organization that helps educate customers on VPN technologies and standards," said Hari Krishnan, Product Manager at F5 Networks. "F5's FirePass solution has been well received in the market and we're pleased to be one of the first to be awarded VPNC certification. Our work with this key security consortium underscores F5's commitment to helping customers address important SSL VPN deployment issues and growing the SSL VPN market."
