F5 Networks Introduces BIG-IP Application Traffic Management Capabilities to the Blade Server Platform

F5's next generation BIG-IP software brings groundbreaking traffic management capabilities, heightened security, and enhanced scalability and provisioning to blade application deployments

F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the leading provider of Application Traffic Management products, today announced that the newest generation of its award-winning BIG-IP® software is now available for F5's BIG-IP Blade Controller product. With this new release of the BIG-IP Blade Controller, customers deploying blade servers can take advantage of the market's leading traffic management software that includes F5's patent-pending Universal Inspection Engine (UIE) and industry-leading security capabilities for Denial of Service (DoS) protection and real-time application security. The BIG-IP Blade Controller was introduced a year ago and is quickly becoming the definitive standard for intelligent traffic management for blade servers; optimizing performance, availability and scale for blade application deployments.

The new version of BIG-IP Blade Controller now includes the same powerful, award-winning Application Traffic Management features and capabilities delivered with F5's BIG-IP Application Switches. Application Traffic Management allows enterprises and service providers to process any mission-critical application or Web service and read any value(s) of an IP-based packet header or payload and direct it to the appropriate resource - based on precise business criteria and requirements.

CRG, an events management company, relies on blade servers and BIG-IP® Blade Controller for high availability and Web performance and needs to provide 100% availability for its clients and internal users. "CRG provides professional services and Web-based applications for event planning, registration and management and a key component of our business requires us to securely deliver applications over the Internet," said Scott Hakinson, Vice President of IT at CRG - Total Event Solutions. "We're excited about the power of F5's Application Traffic Management and this next generation of BIG-IP software for blade servers. This gives us the assurance that we can deploy best practice network architectures, with enterprise-class security, that can be built quickly and inexpensively without having to make application changes or buy expensive high-end servers."

Extending the Benefits of Blade Server Technology

BIG-IP Blade Controller optimizes the benefits of blade servers by taking preemptive measures to prevent application, server or network problems and creates massive economies of scale in computing, cost savings, and personnel resources through management consolidation. Blade server technology has ignited a focus on management consolidation through the use of robust provisioning software, such as the HP ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack, which utilizes technology from Altiris. Enterprises have embraced this technology because it empowers their organizations to reduce application deployment time. F5 recently teamed with HP and Altiris to offer a joint software solution that completes blade deployments with enhanced scalability and provisioning.

"Automated provisioning continues to extend the benefits of management consolidation by reducing the steps involved in deploying additional resources as demand for applications rises," said Poul Nielsen, VP Marketing at Altiris. "F5 has integrated the scalability features of BIG-IP Blade Controller into Altiris Server Management Suite through the use of F5's powerful iControl™ Interface. The combined solution provides fast application scaling in only a matter of clicks."

"Working with F5 Networks and Altiris, HP is able to help our customers implement the benefits of an adaptive infrastructure on ProLiant BL blade servers, providing automated deployment and provisioning which lowers costs and provides greater business agility," said Ron Eller, Vice President, Solutions, HP Industry Standard Servers."

The new version of BIG-IP Blade Controller software brings unmatched application intelligence and security, protecting sites from the heaviest attack volumes and the most common threats against the network. Highlights include:

  • Universal Inspection Engine (UIE) for traffic direction with pinpoint accuracy
  • SOAP/XML Switching for successfully delivering Web services applications
  • Dynamic Reaping for protection against the heaviest DoS attacks
  • SYN Check for added and comprehensive protection against SYN Flood attacks
  • Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) to protect applications and systems from unauthorized use
