F5 Networks Delivers High Availability and Quality of Service for Applications Built on BEA WebLogic Workshop

Integration through F5's open iControl API enables BEA WebLogic Workshop developers to build high availability and performance into their Web services applications and is available world-wide via new ComponentSource hosted BEA Galleries

F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the leading provider of Application Traffic Management products, today announced the delivery of a Web Services Availability Manager Control for BEA WebLogic Workshop™. This Control plugs into BEA WebLogic Workshop and can be used by developers to create Web services applications that offer the highest possible Quality of Service (QoS) and is designed to maximize ROI of mission critical Web services deployments. As part of today's announcement, the F5 Control is now available to the global BEA WebLogic® developer community via the newly launched ComponentSource hosted BEA WebLogic Galleries.

The Web Services Availability Manager can ensure maximum availability and optimal performance of Web services applications developed with BEA WebLogic Workshop. Through seamless integration via F5's open iControl™ API (application programming interface), the Availability Manager can make it easy for developers to build applications that can proactively influence network traffic management decisions in the event of unexpected increases in usage or changes in server and network conditions.

"BEA is pleased to have F5 Networks be a part of the BEA WebLogic Galleries hosted by ComponentSource," said Scott Fallon, vice president, developer relations, BEA Systems (NASDAQ: BEAS). "F5 is adding immediate and measurable value to BEA's Web services initiatives and solutions with the delivery of the Web Services Availability Manager. By enabling BEA applications and Web services to communicate with and actually influence the behavior of the underlying global network, F5's iControl and intelligent networking devices can play a critical role in the successful delivery of Web services."

BEA WebLogic Workshop and Controls

BEA WebLogic Workshop is an integrated development framework that can empower application developers - not just J2EE experts - to rapidly create, test, and deploy enterprise-class Web service applications on the BEA WebLogic Enterprise Platform™. BEA WebLogic Workshop provides a unified development platform that can enable developers to easily build and connect components, data, and application business logic, while shielding them from the complexities of J2EE. A WebLogic Workshop Control is a component that customers can incorporate into a Web service so that developers can easily write to other kinds of applications and components, such as EJBs, databases, and Web services. For example, a Database Control enables an application developer to build a Web service that requests data from a database without needing to know the complexities of JDBC. A Service Control makes it easy to call another Web service.

About the Web Services Availability Control

The Web Services Availability Manager can provide a unique solution for guaranteeing high availability and scalability of Web services. The Availability Manager utilizes F5's iControl API to extract key statistics, such as threshold limits, related to the usage of a particular Web service. Developers can now create rules that use these statistics to determine when a Web service reaches a maximum threshold and approaches instability or compromised performance. Based on these rules, the Web service can proactively instruct F5's BIG-IP® device to request additional resources (i.e. WebLogic Servers running less critical applications) and dynamically expand the pool of available servers supporting the Web service. This can allow the BIG-IP device to distribute the increased user traffic over a wider array of resources increasing overall Web service availability and performance.

"We're excited to join the ComponentSource hosted BEA WebLogic Workshop Gallery, which will expand F5's ability to support emerging enterprise Web services. BEA is the leader in application servers and their innovative WebLogic Workshop development tool is sure to be adopted quickly by leading companies looking to deploy mission-critical Web services," said Dan Matte, vice-president of product management and marketing, F5 Networks. "By integrating F5's network devices through our one-of-a-kind, open iControl API with Weblogic Workshop, we continue to make our solutions more easily available to BEA customers that want to design, develop, and deploy industry leading Web services solutions built on BEA and F5 technologies."
