F5 Networks Delivers BIG-IP Traffic Management Software for New Hyper-Dense Compaq ProLiant BL e-Class Server Blades

BIG-IP delivers intelligent traffic management for all IP applications and services running on the ProLiant BL Server

F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the leading provider of Internet Traffic and Content Management (iTCM) products, today announced that it will team with Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE: CPQ) to make its BIG-IP® software available on the new Compaq ProLiant BL e-Class servers, announced earlier today. The award-winning BIG-IP software, running on Compaq ProLiant BL servers, optimizes server availability and performance, ensuring that applications and servers respond quickly, with the correct content.

"The Compaq ProLiant BL e-Class server supports a broad set of applications for Internet and enterprise data centers and is the first server infrastructure engineered for adaptive computing," said Mark Linesch, vice president, Internet and E-Commerce Solutions, Compaq Industry Standard Server Group. "Compaq ProLiant BL server blades, combined with F5's BIG-IP capabilities, enables greater levels of scalability and intelligent fault resilience for today's dynamic data center environments."

F5 Networks' BIG-IP software provides comprehensive traffic management for the Compaq ProLiant BL server environment and delivers key benefits to Compaq customers, including: significantly increasing Web farm server scalability and optimizing network utilization, and simplifying management by enabling customers to view all the blades in the ProLiant BL Server implementation as a single Web site. BIG-IP sits between the network and ProLiant BL server farm, continuously monitoring each server and/or network device to ensure availability and performance, and routes incoming queries to the most available server blade.

"F5 is excited about Compaq's entry into the hyper-dense blade server market and our ability to provide an Internet traffic management solution that snaps right in," said Tom Pettigrew, vice-president of OEM and channel sales at F5 Networks. "BIG-IP, the premier traffic management solution in the marketplace, is a fundamental enabler of this architecture and an essential component for the successful deployment of IP-based applications and services on ProLiant BL servers. For example, BIG-IP, through its OneConnect capability, significantly reduces blade overhead and allows individual blades to do more work and handle more traffic without adding more equipment, further enhancing the return on investment for Compaq customers."

Using F5's iControl API (Application Programming Interface), the BIG-IP solution will seamlessly support Compaq's Adaptive Infrastructure strategy, which enables customers to dynamically scale and adapt the data center for real-time delivery of computing resources. iControl delivers secure, encrypted intercommunication between network products and facilitates seamless application integration between BIG-IP and all the blades inside a ProLiant BL server blade enclosure.

"The marriage of F5's BIG-IP and Compaq's Blade Server is a win-win combination for Compaq, F5, and their respective customers," said Joel Conover Senior Analyst, eBusiness infrastructure at Current Analysis, Inc. "F5 is recognized as a leader and innovator in the traffic management and load balancing markets, and the integration of its software on multiple platforms gives customers greater freedom when deploying a solution."

Pricing and Availability

Customers will be able to purchase the BIG-IP solution, optimized for the Compaq ProLiant BL e-Class server, through Compaq resellers and F5's Advantage Program Reseller and Distribution Partners. The BIG-IP software solution for the Compaq ProLiant BL server is available in the first calendar quarter of 2002.
