F5 Networks' BIG-IP Supports New BEA WebLogic Platform 8.1

F5 and BEA collaborate to provide unmatched web service availability and performance

F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the leading provider of secure Application Traffic Management products, today announced that its BIG-IP® product supports the BEA WebLogic Enterprise Platform™ from BEA Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: BEAS), the world's leading application infrastructure software company. This integration provides customers with maximum availability, scalability and performance of applications and web services built on the new BEA WebLogic Platform 8.1, an integrated platform that provides superior business integration through the convergence of application development and integration.

"As a BEA partner, we're continually developing advanced integrated solutions to enhance our combined customers' experience," said Dan Matte, vice president of product management and marketing at F5 Networks. "With our products working in tandem, BIG-IP and BEA WebLogic Platform 8.1 more efficiently process the growing number of IP-based applications and services, providing enterprise companies, service providers and e-businesses reliable and secure application delivery over the Internet, an intranet or extranet. F5's iControl API can enable BEA WebLogic to automatically send configuration and management updates to BIG-IP within the network infrastructure, simplifying management and improving traffic distribution."

BIG-IP's interoperability with WebLogic Platform 8.1 can provide customers with a high-performance, easy-to-deploy load balancing solution that supports BEA WebLogic clustering. The combined solution allows enterprises to achieve superior reliability (99.999 percent uptime) scalability and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) processing power for BEA WebLogic clusters and the applications they support. BIG-IP manages users' connections to BEA WebLogic clusters; allowing customers to easily track and determine end-user persistence to BEA WebLogic Server™, ensuring each user is sent to the proper server.

"BEA Systems and F5 continue to offer complementary solutions designed to maximize return on investment of mission-critical Web services deployments," said Scott Edgington, vice president and general manager, global software partners, BEA Systems. "We've teamed to make it easier for developers to build applications that can proactively influence network traffic management decisions in the event of unexpected increases in usage or changes in server and network conditions, which can dramatically increase resource utilization rates and high availability of large scale systems."

In December, F5 announced delivery of a Web Services Availability Manager Control for BEA WebLogic Workshop™. F5's Web Services Availability Manager allows developers using BEA WebLogic Platform 8.1 to build applications utilizing statistics and functions exposed by F5's network devices to proactively expand or contract network resources to meet web service availability or usage demands. Developers can create rules that use these statistics to determine when a Web service reaches a maximum threshold and approaching instability or compromised performance. Based on these rules, the web service can proactively instruct BIG-IP to request additional resources (i.e. WebLogic Servers running less critical applications) and dynamically expand the pool of available servers supporting the web service. This allows BIG-IP to distribute the increased user traffic over a wider array of resources increasing overall Web service availability and performance.
