F5 Networks' BIG-IP Product Awarded Best Content Switch By Network Computing

F5's BIG-IP product tops 'Content Switch' category based on its unique ability to deepen Layer 7 traffic inspection and support for emerging application standards

F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the leading provider of Application Traffic Management products, today announced that its BIG-IP® Application Switch version 4.5 has been named the winner in the category of 'Content Switch' by CMP Media LLC's Network Computing. F5's product was chosen for its unique ability to switch, persist and filter on any type of IP (Internet Protocol) content, reducing the cost and complexity of the infrastructure while increasing its adaptability.

"Being recognized with Network Computing's Well-Connected Award is a significant honor and another demonstration of F5's technological leadership and innovation," said Erik Giesa, Senior Director of Product Management and Marketing at F5 Networks. "When we launched this next generation of BIG-IP software, F5 moved beyond traditional Internet Traffic Management products and introduced Application Traffic Management. We're pleased that the Network Computing judges recognized the unique value proposition of BIG-IP's Universal Inspection Engine and its ability to solve availability, scalability and security issues for any IP-based application."

The winners of the Network Computing Well-Connected Awards were revealed at a ceremony during one of the industry's largest trade shows, Networld+Interop 2003 Las Vegas. All winners will be highlighted in the May 1st issue of Network Computing and also on Network Computing Online at

"The Well-Connected Awards are the only industry awards given by technologists based on real-world product testing and evaluation. We view all products, technologies and services from the same perspective as our readers-our peers-do," said Fritz Nelson, Vice-President and Publisher of Network Computing. "This is an important distinction from any other award program-the products selected in the Well Connected Awards are unique because they have been tested over an enterprise by our editors themselves. They are truly innovative solutions that work."

BIG-IP 4.5 - the uniquely adaptable traffic management product

With BIG-IP Application Traffic Manager 4.5, customers can apply all the benefits (high availability, scalability, security, and increased performance) delivered by traditional Web Internet Traffic Management to any IP-based application, such as Web services, enterprise or mobile applications. Previously the types of protocols these applications use, such as XML, SQL, SIP, etc., could not be understood and acted upon by network devices without designing the functions directly into the application or deploying a complex number of point solutions. F5's next generation of BIG-IP software can read all of the HTTP header or payload in a packet, and switch/persist on XML data for Web services, on custom values for mobile applications, and on information unique to a specific vendor's application server (e.g. BEA WebLogic, Microsoft, Oracle 9iAS, etc.),.
