F5 Networks' BIG-IP 5000 Named Product of the Year

Network Magazine cites F5 as the 2001 innovation leader whose BIG-IP solution 'leapfrogs' the competition in port density and IP traffic management at gigabit speeds

F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the leading provider of Internet Traffic and Content Management (iTCM) products, today announced that its BIG-IP® 5000 Application Switch solution has won the prestigious Product of the Year award from Network Magazine. The BIG-IP 5000 was selected on its broad appeal to the reader community; competitive enhancements; price/performance advantages; technical ingenuity; new features and applications; and serviceability to the market.

"Through an extensive research and review process, the editors select the most innovative and significant hardware, software, and service offerings to hit the market in 2001," said Steve Steinke, Editor-in-Chief, Network Magazine. During January and February, Network Magazine editors evaluate and define relevant categories within the networking technology industry. They consult with readers and active members in each vertical industry to further explore and confirm winners in each category.

According to Network Magazine, F5's BIG-IP 5000 IP Application Switch was an almost unanimous winner among the analysts and end users polled. A 24-port, layer-2/3 switch with full layer 4-7 software capabilities, the BIG-IP 5000 leapfrogs the competition in port density and can sort (Intercept, Inspect, Transform, and Direct) IP traffic by a number of business rules and parameters. The product offers extra processing power to ensure traffic is routed intelligently to the most efficient destination, whether for caching, traffic shaping, or observing user policies. Judges also gave high marks for the product's user interface, citing its drill-down capabilities and ease of use. Other winning features highlighted by Network Magazine include the BIG-IP 5000's:

  • Integrated SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) for encryption acceleration,
  • Keep-alives connections management for redundancy
  • Support for Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) streams, important for value-added services such as VoIP, video, and gaming applications.
  • Ability to simultaneously balance firewalls, ISP links, and Web Applications and services
  • Open iControl API to interface with other F5 products or third party applications, such as BEA Systems' WebLogic Server, Microsoft .NET services, Oracle 9i, and other application servers

"We are very honored to receive this award as judged by respectable editorial and end-user critics," said Dan Matte, vice-president of product management and marketing at F5 Networks. "When we designed and developed the BIG-IP 5000, we knew we were delivering a breakthrough product to the market - a solution that every enterprise and service provider has to consider when they evaluate their infrastructure needs, because of the BIG-IP 5000's unbeatable intelligence, processing power, security and price-performance."

The Product of the Year Award winners will be featured in the May 2002 issue of Network Magazine. An awards ceremony for this year's winners will be held at Wednesday, May 8th during Networld + Interop Spring 2002 in Las Vegas.
