F5 Keeps Gamers Online at the PDXLAN Gaming Conference

F5's BIG-IP Link Controller provides continuous, fast reliable connections for users at the 2006 PDXLAN, one of the largest gaming conferences in North America

F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the global leader in Application Delivery Networking, today announced the BIG-IP® Link Controller will be an integral part of the PDXLAN Gaming Conference by providing gaming enthusiasts with continuous and reliable connections to the Internet. Deployed between firewalls and routers, the BIG-IP Link Controller monitors the health and capacity of each ISP connection to control bandwidth, provide high availability for ISP links, and reduce management via a simplified multi-homing architecture.

PDXLAN hosts one of the largest online gaming parties in North America. Gamers bring their computers to this convention and connect them together to form a Local Area Network (LAN) so that they can join in an array of online computer games and compete against each other in real time. The tournament hosts over 500 online gamers playing 24x7, for up to four days straight. The result is an inordinate amount of Internet traffic that has many spikes, which is extremely difficult to accommodate while maintaining consistent, reliable performance.

"The BIG-IP Link Controller will be our safety net," said Matt Conwell, PDXLAN Event Organizer. "With only one link, there wouldn't be any redundancy and that's too risky. If the Internet goes down, it's possibly a show stopper."

For the PDXLAN IT staff, there are only two rules - ensure everyone has network access and everyone stays connected. If gamers have a bad network experience or lose their connection, they will not be happy since they are playing for prizes worth up to $100,000. PDXLAN is taking no chances and will once again rely upon F5's BIG-IP® Link Controller for the upcoming conference. The BIG-IP Link Controller will manage both incoming and outgoing Internet traffic and transparently route users over the best link to guarantee that PDXLAN gamers enjoy the best possible experience.

For significant cost savings, PDXLAN will be using the BIG-IP Link Controller to aggregate multiple low-cost cable modems into a bigger, high performance pipe rather than pay the high cost of a single big pipe. Using multiple connections also enables PDXLAN to maintain full redundancy between cable lines so that if one line goes down, the BIG-IP Link Controller immediately fails over to another line so that game play continues without interruption.

Speaking about last year's event, Daaniël van Siereveld, a network engineer for PDXLAN, stated: "Some of the bandwidth and performance numbers I achieved from each link established with the BIG-IP Link Controller were pretty impressive. Gamers had downloaded over 30 gigs in about seven hours. Plus, they acknowledged that the network was great - extremely fast with no downtime at all."

"F5 is delighted to again be a trusted partner with the PDXLAN Gaming Convention," said Satya Vardharajan, Product Manager at F5. "This high trafficked online event requires business-grade Internet connectivity and reliable WAN connections - where failure is not an option. BIG-IP Link Controller provides next generation WAN link traffic management for maximum link performance and availability. We're confident that our solution will help this rapidly growing gaming event run smoothly."

PDXLAN coordinates and produces some of the largest and most popular LAN parties, gaming events and tournaments in North America, where contestants compete for prizes worth up to $100,000. Gamers from across the country and around the world gather at PDXLAN events to play just about any computer game imaginable in an intense, professional and always fun atmosphere. The newest PDXLAN event - PDXLAN 6 - is expected to draw over 500 gamers along with sponsors Intel and BFG.
