F5 Joins VMware Technology Alliance Partner (TAP) Program

Alliance points to continued integration and activities between VMware and F5 to benefit joint customers seeking to deploy virtualization solutions

F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the global leader in Application Delivery Networking, today announced that it has joined the VMware Technology Alliance Partner (TAP) program as a Select Partner. Through this alliance, F5 gains the use of VMware testing software, marketing tools, and technical support for technology integration between the two companies.

Through strategic alliances like this one, as well as its acquisition of Acopia Networks, F5 continues to add benefits for customers leveraging virtualization technologies. As IT organizations focus more and more on virtualized infrastructures, F5 encourages customers deploying Application Delivery Networks to leverage virtualization in providing secure, optimized, and highly available applications.

"Virtualization platforms have matured to the point that they are now taking on enterprise class applications and workloads," said Chris Wolf, Senior Analyst at Burton Group. "Virtualizing critical applications is not without risk, and organizations that leverage proven virtualization and application delivery technologies are best positioned for success. Successful enterprise virtualization deployments are those that look beyond the hypervisor and employ best-of-breed application delivery solutions that securely, efficiently, and reliably connect the endpoints between both virtual and physical worlds."

As the alliance develops, F5 will continue to validate the interoperability of its solutions with those from VMware, helping customers be confident of the benefits of deploying them in concert. Other specific benefits and developments related to this technology alliance include:

Testing and Documentation - F5 is currently developing materials that demonstrate how customers can use F5® technologies to increase the performance, availability, and scalability of their applications running on VMware software, and reduce overall TCO as well.

The first of these documents describes how to deploy F5's BIG-IP® devices and WANJet® appliance in conjunction with VMware ESX Server to ensure availability of applications while improving end-user experience and maximizing each server's capacity. This document and other F5 materials related to VMware solutions are available here:

Customer Innovation - F5's DevCentral SMcustomer-driven developer community portal will feature a new VMware section. This forum will showcase innovative ways customers are combining VMware technology with the iRules scripting language-a TCL-based customizable command language that helps define how F5 solutions secure, optimize, and deliver any bi-directional IP application traffic or flow-to streamline application traffic from virtual machines.

Future Opportunities - With this alliance, F5 will have the opportunity to develop tighter product integration and interoperability with VMware solutions, such as demonstrating F5® Acopia solutions' unique ability to complement VMware Infrastructure 3 in NAS environments, expanding the ease of provisioning, increasing availability of virtual machines, and optimizing the performance of VMware solutions on NAS.

F5 will continue to look for new ways to collaborate with VMware to help optimize joint customers' application delivery environments.

"F5 and VMware have many joint customers who utilize our respective products because of their virtualization capabilities," said Jim Ritchings, VP of Business Development at F5. "F5's solutions work in concert with VMware solutions by intelligently managing application traffic from virtual machines, optimizing the underlying storage environment and delivering maximum performance and availability for our customers. Through this continuing alliance and interoperability efforts, customers can be sure that F5 products will yield powerful benefits to those running VMware solutions."
