F5 Introduces Application Ready Network

The most comprehensive application delivery network designed for the successful delivery of Microsoft applications

F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the global leader in Application Delivery Networking, today announced the Application Ready Network. Now, enterprise organizations using Microsoft applications have a simplified way to design, deploy, and manage an integrated, optimized network infrastructure from a single vendor. F5's unique application delivery network has been specially architected, integrated, tested, and documented to ensure the successful delivery of Microsoft applications.

F5's Application Ready Network is a holistic application network architecture and infrastructure designed and optimized specifically for the 2007 Microsoft Office system, including Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, and Microsoft Live Communications Server 2005, with plans to support the upcoming Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007. It functions as a simple overlay network built on the strengths and improvements Microsoft has implemented across their entire Office portfolio. F5's Application Ready Network removes the bottlenecks outside the application's control, such as WAN latency, that put application deployments at risk. It improves end-user client performance, creates an even stronger security posture, unifies access control and enforcement, and ensures the superior scalability of the 2007 Office system applications.

"We're impressed with F5's holistic view of the application and network as well as their drive to make the network support Microsoft deployments," said Rob Bernard, general manager of the Worldwide ISV Group at Microsoft Corp. "The comprehensive architecture F5 has designed will optimize application performance for Microsoft customers."

Application Ready Network: Designed, tested, and documented for Microsoft Applications

The comprehensive design was created to simulate a real-world environment using F5's entire Application Delivery Networking product portfolio along with Exchange Server 2007, Office SharePoint Server 2007, Active Directory, and Live Communications Server 2005 with clients running Windows Vista and Windows XP with Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Explorer 7. The results reveal significant benefits across application acceleration, optimization, security and scalability. Below is an example of the repeatable test results with Microsoft applications:

  • Acceleration - End-user client experience improved up to 5 times for Exchange Server 2007 and SharePoint Server 2007 deployments with no changes to the applications themselves
  • Optimization - Reduced bandwidth and server load by 50 and 30 percent, respectively, saving money and enabling consolidation of resources
  • Scalability - Doubled the scale at one-third of the infrastructure cost, providing a repeatable 99.999% availability model

"Successful application deployment can be hindered by a number of issues beyond an application's control, including network latency, slow links, HTTP/S limitations, potential TCP incompatibilities, server load, connection limits, and other variables," said Cindy Borovick, Research Director, Datacenter Networks, IDC, Inc. "F5's Application Ready Network provides SharePoint Server 2007- and Exchange Server-specific acceleration functions and policies to improve end-user experience and ease IT deployment concerns."

Who benefits?

The Application Ready Network has been designed for application developers, architects, and network professionals, empowering these teams to leverage F5's network infrastructure resources as a service. It functions as a reusable and open system platform, creating a dynamic environment and providing the infrastructure flexibility for an organization evolving through Microsoft's Infrastructure Optimization Model. Key customer benefits include:

  • Improved client application response time by up to 5 times
  • Lowered infrastructure and operation costs by 50 percent
  • Simplified and unified security to reduce errors, complexity, and costs
  • Five nines of availability for Microsoft applications

"Through an open and dynamic architecture, F5's Application Ready Network facilitates better collaboration between the network and application teams," said Dan Matte, SVP of Marketing at F5. "The result is improved processes, reduced operational costs, and faster deployment for Exchange Server 2007, Office SharePoint Server 2007, and Live Communications Server 2005. In developing this network, F5 compiled targeted research, engineering, testing, and documentation on how to deploy an optimized infrastructure to enable Microsoft customers to reduce application roll-out times by up to 33%. And, by seamlessly integrating with existing network and application architectures, enterprises can mitigate the risk of application deployment problems at a minimal cost."

F5's Application Ready Network is available today. In addition, F5 will continue to design and develop other application partners' Ready Network designs, as well as those for additional Microsoft server products, to further demonstrate the benefits and flexibility of F5's unique Application Delivery Networking technologies to a growing number of enterprises.
