Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City Relies on F5 Product Suite for Best Practice HIPAA Compliance and Significant Application Performance Improvement

Reduces page-load times by 96% while achieving better end-user experience, application security, and business continuity

F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV) the global leader in Application Delivery Networking, today announced that Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (BCBSKC) has improved business continuity, application performance, and data integrity for its popular healthcare information website, using F5's application delivery networking product suite. Insurance providers, brokers, and employees now have non-stop, secure, and accelerated access to key healthcare coverage, wellness, and directory information.

BCBSKC serves nearly 900,000 members in the greater Kansas City region, and serves more than 25,000 unique visitors on its website. Enhanced technology, including sophisticated on-line tools and applications, and growing site popularity taxed BCBSKC's servers, increasing network vulnerability and forcing the servers to expend processing power on highly sensitive, SSL encrypted traffic - decreasing application performance. Healthcare compliance measures, such as HIPAA, also created the need for comprehensive network and application level security.

To address these challenges, the IT team at BCBSKC chose to leverage F5's comprehensive product suite. The BIG-IP® Link Controller was deployed to maintain ISP redundancy and to achieve the uptime and performance required for its website. F5's BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager (LTM) was added next to offload SSL processing and to provide traffic management for the corporation's DMZ web servers. By offloading SSL processing, BIG-IP LTM freed up the company's web servers, eliminated the need for SSL licenses on each server, and improved application performance. Finally, BCBSKC implemented F5's TrafficShield product for comprehensive application-layer security. F5's TrafficShield protects against HTTP and HTTPS-born attacks allowing BCBSKC to maintain HIPAA compliance, while securing customers' personal information.

"F5's BIG-IP product family delivers the network scalability, security, and performance we require," commented Chad O'Neal, Web Technical Engineer at BCBSKC. "Our previous application firewall triggered web page download times of up to 30 seconds. With TrafficShield, page load times dropped to under one second - and they're secure. We are confident F5 will continue to help meet stringent security requirements and deliver an enhanced end-user experience as we continue to add advanced applications to better serve our customers."

"Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City is an innovative leader in the healthcare insurance industry, as demonstrated in the services advancements they've delivered to customers via their web site," said Erik Giesa, Vice President of Product Management at F5. "The full-proxy architecture and application-level intelligence provided by F5's unique TMOS platform enables organizations like BCBSKC to cost-effectively scale their networks, while maintaining the efficiency, adaptability, and competitiveness they need to succeed."
